Does Your Son Struggle
With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?
Resolution Ranch Academy Can Help
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder evidenced by unwanted and recurring thoughts, feelings and sensations.
His incessant cycle of undesirable thoughts (obsessions) leads him to attempts to neutralize them by engaging in compulsive actions. Even though he will know that the thoughts or behaviors are disproportionate, he will get only momentary reprieve by performing the compulsive behaviors.
This can be even more anxiety-producing, with concern about disease, germs, insistence for symmetry or exactitude, unwanted urges to injure someone, objectionable sacred or sexual thoughts.
His common compulsions may be witnessed in excessively ceremonial behavior, like continually saying specific words or numbers over and over again or repetition of normal activities (like turning on/off the stove, hand washing, in/out of a room), consuming specific foods in a very precise sequence, hoarding objects (particularly items without any discernable value).
*Note: while sometimes used synonymously, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder should not be confused with OCPD, or Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. An OCD sufferer has unwelcome thoughts and understands them to be pointless, while an OCPD sufferer believes his thinking to be natural and appropriate.
How Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is Treated at Resolution
If left untreated, your child might suffer further problems (although not all necessarily directly brought on by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder): eating or anxiety disorders, depression, substance abuse, an overall, poor quality of life, suicidal thoughts (or behavior).
Cognitive behavior therapy is most efficient, often when used together with medication, in helping him confront his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder anxieties and unease in healthy ways. Anti-depressants (principally ones that interact with the brain’s serotonin production) may also be prescribed and useful in alleviating symptoms of OCD.
