Does Your Son Struggle With
Compulsive Personality Disorder?
Resolution Ranch Academy Can Help
Resolution Ranch Academy can help your boy if he has Compulsive Personality Disorder, (or Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, or OCPD). This is seen as a fixation with control and perfectionism, revealing itself in highly driven (often, first born) children. Your teenager may find it very hard to be decisive, and be overly sensitive to critique, struggle with flexibility or being open to new situations, as he is essentially seeking perfection in virtually everything he does. He may show repetitive behaviors (as in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder*) that are beyond his control to stop, have a fixation with minutiae and rules, and even be a workaholic.
He’s likely to labor under what he expects of himself, as well as perceived expectations of those around him.
Causes are believed to be interlinking unbalanced brain chemistry with genetic and environmental factors.
*Note: while used interchangeably at times, OCPD should not be confused with OCD. An OCD sufferer has undesired thoughts, but an OCPD sufferer believes his thinking to be natural and correct.
Treatment For Compulsive Personality Disorder at Resolution Ranch Academy
There aren’t blood tests able to verify your child’s diagnosis; a physician must determine whether his symptoms and life history meet the criteria. His thinking may be so instinctive that he does not recognize that he has this problem, possibly not even realizing it until his world shatters around him.
Persistent group/individual and long-term psychotherapy can be highly effective in improving his environment, but he is unlikely to be very open to change. It is important to remember that he has not chosen to have these compulsive thoughts and so any judgment, actual or perceived, only increases the stress he already faces. It is important to support him, to help him feel comfortable in new ways of thinking, and accept him, rather than judge him for compulsive behaviors.
Support groups are an excellent adjunct, as a means to gain emotional and social support from the community, assuring your son’s autonomy and stability.
